Foil and spot UV files use four layers: a locked template on top, one layer per finish, and your CMYK artwork on the bottom. Export one PDF per layer, with only the template and that layer visible.

Organize your layers
Lock the template layer at the top of the stack. Give foil and spot UV each their own layer, and put all CMYK artwork on the bottom ARTWORK layer.
Copy and fill the finish area
Copy the logo or element from the ARTWORK layer, paste it in place on the foil or spot UV layer, and turn it into a solid shape filled 100% black.
Save one PDF per layer
Outline text and embed images. Turn on the template plus one layer at a time and save a high-quality PDF for each, with the layer name at the end of the file name.
What color should foil and spot UV be?
Solid 100% black. The black shape tells the press exactly where the foil or gloss goes. The color your viewer sees comes from the ARTWORK layer or the foil itself.
Can a logo be printed in color and also have spot UV?
Yes. Keep the color logo on the ARTWORK layer, paste an exact copy in place on the spot UV layer and fill that copy solid 100% black.
How should I name the files?
Save one PDF per layer and end each file name with the layer name, for example Project - PRINT, Project - SPOT UV and Project - FOIL.
Does this work for embossing and debossing?
Yes. Embossing and debossing use the same setup: their own layer, a solid 100% black shape, and their own PDF.
How much do foil and spot UV cost?
Gold or silver foil and spot UV high gloss are $250 each per order, not per piece.
